Urban Greenery is vital for building sustainable, healthy, and liveable cities. It improves air quality, mitigates urban heat, supports biodiversity, and effectively manages stormwater. Beyond environmental benefits, green spaces promote mental wellbeing, reduce stress, and encourage active lifestyles.

Solutions for Urban Greenery and Landscaping

At Sika, we deliver sustainable, innovative, and cost-effective urban greenery and landscaping solutions to customers worldwide. We partner with our clients to achieve their environmental and sustainability goals across every stage of the building lifecycle — from design and specification to maintenance and enhancement.

1. Intensive Green Roof

Sika’s Intensive Green Roof (landscape rooftop) features deeper-rooted growing plants ranging from lawns, flowering plants, and shrubs to trees planted in soil media on a concrete roof surface or in planter boxes. A typical build up would include a root-resistant waterproofing membrane to prevent damage by invasive plant roots and a drainage layer. Beyond enhancing aesthetics, the system filters airborne pollutants, improves sound insulation, and extends the lifespan of the roof and waterproofing membrane by protecting them from sunlight and UV exposure. It also manages stormwater at the source, reducing peak flows and minimising downstream flooding.

2. Turf Stabilisation

Sika’s turf stabilisation system replaces traditional asphalt and concrete with permeable surfaces that can be turfed or planted with groundcover, allowing these functional areas to support drainage while seamlessly integrating into the landscape’s overall aesthetics. The system prevents erosion and soil migration without restricting root or runner growth, encouraging healthy vegetation. Engineered to support heavy vehicular loads, it can be quickly and easily installed to create reinforced grass or gravel access routes, including those required for emergency vehicle access.

3. Outdoor Raised Flooring

Sika’s outdoor raised flooring features the installation of raised decks or tiles, pavers, or stones on adjustable pedestals, creating a functional space beneath the surface for cables, water pipes, and other essential infrastructure.
This design enhances air circulation and ventilation, preventing mold growth and unpleasant odors while promoting heat dispersion. The system also allows easy access for maintenance and can be installed quickly without the need for specialised tools.

4. Sub-Surface Drainage

Sika’s lightweight, high-strength sub-surface drainage systems efficiently channel excess water away from soil and structural layers, preventing waterlogging and improving long-term stability. The systems act as a protective layer for the waterproofing membrane, preventing any damage from the weight of the soil and roots, reducing maintenance requirements. Designed to eliminate the need for heavy gravel aggregates—particularly in planter boxes and roof gardens—the systems also provide effective drainage behind retaining walls, reducing the buildup of hydrostatic pressure.

5. On-Site Stormwater Detention

Sika’s on-site stormwater detention (OSD) provides temporary storage for stormwater that falls to the ground and gradually releases the stored water into the development’s drainage network, which reduces the likelihood of flooding downstream, especially during heavy rainfall events.

6. Green Wall

Green walls (vertical gardens) enable lush vegetation in space-constrained urban areas.
By absorbing solar radiation and cooling the air through evapotranspiration, green walls lower temperatures and reduce building heat gain. The plants filter pollutants, improve air quality, and provide shade that cools facades while releasing moisture to cool the surrounding environment. Sika’s state-of-the-art green walls combine striking aesthetics with minimal maintenance.

7. BioSolar Roof

Sika’s Biosolar roof integrates vegetation with solar panels, boosting renewable energy production, supporting biodiversity, and reducing urban heat. The greenery layer cools the solar panels for higher efficiency and provides building insulation.

8. Extensive Green Roof

Sika’s lightweight and low-maintenance Extensive Green Roof features shallow-growing drought-resistant plants on lightweight soil layered over drainage, water retention, and waterproofing systems, making it suitable for a wide range of buildings and structures. Beyond enhancing aesthetics, the system filters airborne pollutants, lowers the temperature of the roof surface, and extends the lifespan of the roof and waterproofing membrane by protecting them from sunlight and UV exposure. It also manages stormwater at the source, reducing peak flows and minimising downstream flooding.
